All our packaging follows this principle. And we want to continue improving. That’s why we are especially proud
 to be able to present our wholegrain crispbreads in their new and improved packaging from January 2021.

Not only will our new reclosure label save 30% on plastic film and enable us to get rid of the yellow plastic clip, but the switch to mono-material also increases recyclability to 88%; a great value according to the independent cyclos-HTP institute (EU-wide certification on national-state level for Germany and Austria).
The content and quality stay the same, of course! A win-win situation for crispbread fans and the environment alike.

Less is more

Optimising our wholegrain crispbread packaging is another step on our journey towards increased sustainability. We reduced the thickness of the packaging film for our wholegrain snacks back in 2016 already.
This meant we could save on about 33 % of film used each year. In 2019, we were able to reduce the use of film for most of our products by another 7% thanks to some additional optimisations. 

We regularly check our packaging concepts and are always looking for alternative packaging solutions that comply with our three essential requirements: Optimal product protection, environmentally conscious use of packaging and simple, crunchy delight.

#1 Optimal product protection

“Cracking good bite” – this is only possible, of course, if the packaging is designed in such a way that it keeps our products crunchy and of high quality. That’s why we need packaging that ensures exactly that and guarantees your unique delightful crunchy moment.

When we choose our packaging, the specific product characteristics of our crunchy delights play a decisive role, because due to their extra portion of grains and seeds they naturally contain a relatively high proportion of oils and fats. Their crispy-crunchy consistency makes them more susceptible to breaking, too. 
This means that our packaging needs to perform really well in order to guarantee freshness, hygiene and great taste. 

We are currently using polypropylene, PP for short.  Polypropylene is plastic material that is commonly used in the food industry. It is a good barrier against fat and moisture and, for its material input, is durable and puncture-resistant – this makes it an optimal choice for protecting our favourite crunchy delights.
We are aware that there are more sustainable solutions in the food packaging sector for some product categories; but are they suitable for our products as well? We’re afraid that at the moment they’re not. There is no true alternative that fits our specific product characteristics, is made from renewable resources and has a positive environmental impact at the same time. However, even though we can’t do without plastic film (yet), we still promote environmentally conscious use of packaging, we constantly follow the trends in the packaging sector and we remain open for any new developments in the area of plastic alternatives.

#2 Environmentally conscious use of packaging

As much as needed, as little as possible – you’ll never find any deceptive packaging at Dr. Karg’s! We strive to use as little packaging as possible and to only choose packaging that can be recycled.

For packaging our wholegrain crispbread, wholegrain snacks and HÜTTS wholegrain delights, we use so-called mono film made from polypropylene (PP), i. e. only one kind of plastic. We do without any composite material or mixed plastic (= several thin layers of film glued together), which makes our packaging easy to recycle. This way, after reprocessing, the material can be used as recycled material and become part of new PP-based packaging. With correct disposal, our packaging material becomes reusable again.

By optimising the packaging of our wholegrain crispbread (eliminating the yellow fastening clips, less plastic film due to a shorter bag) and using thin PP film from mono-composite material, we achieve an in increase in recyclability to a total of 88%, as was confirmed by the independent cyclos-HTP institute. In general, this is a great value for food packaging made of plastic. 100% of the unprinted portion is recyclable and can be reused without any compromise as regards quality.  Even the printed label can be recycled and used for other applications, but there is some slight loss of quality due to so-called “impurities” (such as printing ink). 100% recyclability of the complete packaging would only be possible if we used transparent packaging from mono-material without print. 
The fact that our packaging film weighs so little also helps us to use less packaging and therefore produce less waste. 

Where we currently use paper inserts, such as for our Protein thins and our Delicate Crunch crispbreads, we opted for FSC® certified material only. The FSC® seal (Forest Stewardship Council) stands for sustainable forestry. By using FSC® certified material, we can guarantee that only the quantity of wood that will grow back is taken for producing our inserts.

We are constantly reducing our impact on the environment in order to take care of the future today. This is only possible as a joint effort – please help and make sure you dispose of our packaging correctly.

#3 Simple, crunchy delight

For us, this means using packaging that not only optimally protects our products and consider the environmentally conscious use of packaging, but that’s another thing as well: convenient.

This goes for easy opening and resealing and easy disposal as well.  
Our wholegrain snacks and HÜTTS wholegrain delights have a convenient reseal on the back of each packaging unit. In our packaging relaunch in 2021, our wholegrain crispbreads will even have an opening and resealing function integrated into the label, which will enable easy retrieval and storage of the slices. 

All of the packaging material we use can easily be separated from each other, which means easier disposal: Please put the packaging of our crispbread, snacks and HÜTTS into the yellow bin or yellow sack and put the inserts of our Delicate Crunch crispbreads and Protein thins into paper waste.*

Recycling helps the environment –

but we have to do it together

Our packaging can be recycled – but only if you separate it correctly from residual waste.
Once emptied, the packaging of our crispbread, wholegrain snacks, and HÜTTS belongs in the plastic bin.* The paper part of any empty packaging of our Pumpkin Seeds Protein thins and Delicate Crunch crispbreads belongs in the paper bin. 
That wasn’t so hard, was it? And to make it even easier to go the extra mile: About 3.1 million tons of CO2** are saved in Germany every year thanks to packaging being recycled.

Separating waste made easy

It's worth taking a closer look

It’s often not that easy to separate your waste correctly. This is especially true for product packaging; many times, it seems the packaging designers didn't focus much on recyclability.
One good example is yoghurt cups with a paper envelope. Never throw these away in one piece: The paper envelope does not belong in the plastic waste but in the paper bin.

Our advice: Before throwing empty packaging out, check carefully if the individual parts can be separated from each other.
